Engin My Choice 50 GB Ultra VoIP Broadband Plan Compare Engin’s VoIP Plans For Speed, Cost and Data Allowance

Posted February 3rd, 2012

Engin is Australia’s leading provider of broadband and telephone services. It is one of the country’s first providers of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, allowing customers to make and receive telephone calls through their broadband connection by sending voice signals over the Internet rather than using regular telephone channels. Thanks to VoIP, the costs of calls to local, national and international numbers has been  significantly reduced.

Engin offers MyChoice packages which are versatile and can be tailored to fit your broadband and VoIP needs. There are five MyChoice packages available: Lite, Standard, Ultra, Premium and Extreme.  All packages offer the standard ADSL2+ broadband connection for uploads and downloads.

Engin MyChoice Ultra VoIP Broadband Plan

Engin MyChoice Ultra VoIP Broadband Plan offers a total of 80 GB data allocation per month. This data quota is split to 40 GB each for peak and off-peak times. The Ultra VoIP Broadband Plan is available on a month to month contract or with a 24 month contract. With the latter, you are under no obligation to maintain a minimum number of months with Engin, but for the latter, your subscription is locked in for 24 months. The Ultra VoIP Broadband Plan runs up to 24 Mbit per second for downloads and 1.3 Mbit per second for uploads.

Only downloads are counted against your monthly data quota. When you have exceeded the 80 GB monthly data allocation of your connection, you will not be charged extra for your continued use. Instead, your connection will be shaped to 256 kbps and will go back to running ADSL2+ speeds when your data allocation is reset in the next month.

However, if you are not comfortable with the shaped speed and would like to browse with the optimal ADSL2+ speeds, Engin offers you top-ups called afterburners which give extra boost to your connection. Afterburners are available in 1 GB block for $5 extra, a 2 GB boost for $10 and a 3 GB allocation for an extra $15. Boosters can also be purchased even if you are still within the monthly allocated data quota, and you simply want to make sure you stay that way.

Note that MyChoice peak hours are from 8 am to 12 am AEST/AEDT. Off-peak hours are 12 am to 8 am AEST/AEDT.

MyChoice Pricing

Engin’s MyChoice Ultra plan comes in a month to month contract or as 24 month contract. The month to month contract requires you to pay for each month you use. You are under no obligation to hold a contract with a minimum number of months. There is an upfront installation fee of $149 and the monthly fee of $74.95. The month to month contract does not come with a bonus modem or Voice Box.

A 24 month period is a requisite lockdown time for this contract. Any cancellation before the end of that period will merit a disconnection fee of $15 for each month remaining in the contract. It has a cheaper upfront setup fee of $49 with the same monthly fee of $74.95. The 24 month contract includes a bonus 4-port modem/router and Voice Box.

Engin’s Voice Box is a device which connects your old or analogue phone signal to digital signals so it can maximise the use of your broadband connection for calls. You just need to plug in your regular handset to one end of the Voice Box, and the other end of the Voice Box to your modem or router. The Voice Box is also known as an Analogue Telephone Adaptor, or ATA.

VoIP Plans

MyChoice Broadband also offers  a wide range of Voice Over Internet Protocol plans that can be easily combined with the Ultra broadband plan to fit your needs. MyChoice Ultra Broadband includes the National VoIP plan that lets you call local and national numbers, but you can take your pick of the other VoIP plans that Engin offers. International calls can be made to standard landlines only.

  • Home + includes local and national calls, with mobile calls being charged at 22c per minute. This plan also includes calls to eight international countries, while calls to 13 pre-defined countries are charged at 20c per call. The Home + plan can be availed at an added fee of $5 per month.
  • Mobile + offers 200 calls or 400 minutes worth of calls to mobile numbers in Australia. Local and national calls to landlines are charged at 10c per call. After using the allotted calls, each call is charged at 27c. International calls are charged from 1.9c every minute. You can upgrade your VoIP plan to Mobile + for $5 each month.
  • Max + plan includes 600 minutes to local, national and Australian mobile numbers, and to over 100 countries. After the included calls have been used, they are charged 15c for local and national calls; mobile calls run at 27c per minute, and international calls are at 1.9c per minute.
  • Unlimited calls are the best option for those who need to make a lot of calls. It is ideal for those who run their own businesses. Calls are unlimited to local, national and mobile numbers. Calls made through Engin’s MyChoice VoIP do not count against your monthly data quota even though it uses the same broadband connection. Engin provides a dedicated voice channel for VoIP, making your calls clear and crisp, with the highest quality available even if your connection’s shaped.

Engin’s Sydney-based support staff is on hand Monday to Saturday for any questions or concerns you may have about the service. The company has a solid reputation as Australia’s provider of premier broadband and VoIP services. A 30-day free trial is offered by Engin to help give you an idea of whether the service works well for you.
