TPG broadband speeds
TPG Telecom Limited was formerly known as SP Telemedia, it is a leading Australian internet service provider (ISP). In 2008 it merged with Soul which helped it reach an annual revenue of close to $500 million. In March 2010 it took over Pipe Networks which gave it access to the Australian fibre optic network which included the all important Pipe Pacific Cable that linked Sydney with Guam. From there direct links can be made with Japan and the USA. All this went toward building for the future, a future that will see TPG broadband speed coverage widen substantially.
This sustained growth has created a company that is now an integrated and dynamic force in Australian telecommunications providing services such as data and voice solutions through one of Australia’s largest networks. TPG’s own network infrastructure that has involved significant investment has grown from a television broadcasting base in its early days to today where it enjoys fixed line, fibre and wireless that links its voice clients with call collection areas across Australia which now includes data and internet through over 350 exchanges. This gives TPG broadband coverage that is continually growing.
TPG’s Comprehensive Mobile Coverage Throughout Australia
TPG also delivers a comprehensive mobile coverage at typical TPG broadband speeds. It achieves these speeds with three different mobile spectrum frequencies:
- The 2G network covers approximately 96 percent of the Australian population. This network is comprised of a single band 900 MHz. It is a good network to be linked to if you only want to receive mobile calls and SMS messages. It is also a handy network to use if you live or frequently travel to regional areas.
- The 3G single band network reaches 80 percent of the population. It operates under a single band 21000MHz. This does more than provide normal mobile services, it is the network that allows wireless broadband to operate which includes downloading music from various websites, checking emails and internet browsing. The 3G network presently reaches 80 percent of the Australian population delivering the highest TPG broadband speeds depending on your location. For this reason it is best suited to users living in the more populated metropolitan areas.
- The dual band network has coverage over 96 percent of the population. This dual band network operates within 2100MHz/900MHz and is able to be connected to both the 2G and 3G technologies. This means faster TPG broadband speeds when coupled with 3G making it the most suitable for wireless broadband and internet browsing. It is the right connection to bring the world to you as long as you are within the TPG broadband coverage area. When TPG refer to 3G it is referring to fast wireless internet downloads.
TPG ADSL2+ speeds
If want to receive the highest TPG broadband speeds that ADSL2+ is capable of delivering you will also have to have compatible ADSL2+ modems and filters. If you are in a favourable locality you can expect to obtain speeds greater than 10Mbps. This will apply to approximately 70 percent of the population, mainly those living within close proximity of a capital city CBD. Factors that affect the download speed you will actually experience will include your distance from your local telephone exchange and the quality of your equipment.
TPG ADSL Speeds
ADSL speeds are also affected by your distance from the exchange and the condition of your present copper wire connection from the exchange to your computer. TPG acceptable speeds are regarded as being 880kbps and 136kbps.
TPG Mobile Broadband Speeds
The maximum speeds you can expect to receive with a TPG mobile broadband connection is in the vicinity of 2Mbps and 7.2Mbps. The average is more like 512Kbps to 3Mbps for downloading and 512Kbps and 1.2Mbps for uploading. Outside of the 3G area you will have to fall back on the GSM/GPRS network which is much slower, most likely to be around 64Kbps. This speed will also vary however depending on many factors, the main ones being:
- Your location
- Source of your downloading and the volume of traffic
- Software
- Equipment capabilities.
It can be clearly seen that TPG broadband speeds are dependent on many factors. No two locations can expect exactly the same results. Much of this is to change however when the Federal Government has completed the roll out of its National Broadband Network (NBN). This network will cover the vast majority of Australians and deliver a fibre optic cable connection that all ISPs, including TPG, can access at the same price. The result will be a much faster and more reliable internet broadband for all users. TPG broadband speed coverage, that is already quite substantial, will improve considerably, along with that delivered across the board in all its telecommunication dealings. Its current fibre optic network will no doubt give it a good start as the technology further develops.
