VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. This is a new technology which allows users to make phone calls over an Internet line. VoIP converts the voice signal data from a telephone connection into digital signals which travel through the Internet line. These signals are then converted back into voice signals at the other user’s end. So essentially, VoIP allows users to send and receive voice signals (i.e. telephone conversations) over an Internet line. Typically, VoIP services cost only a fraction of regular telephone costs.

With TPG’s Naked ADSL2+ with VoIP plans, customers can enjoy super-fast Internet speeds as well as low cost telephone services. In addition, customers receive a DID number so that they can receive calls from friends and family.

18. What is a “DID number”?
DID stands for Direct In Dial. It is a phone number that is assigned to TPG Naked ADSL2+ VoIP customers, so that their friends and family can call them. The format of this number is the same format as regular phone numbers, that is in the format of <area code> <8 digit number>. This DID number is assigned to TPG Naked ADSL2+ VoIP plan customers for free.

19. What are the advantages of using TPG Naked ADSL2+ VoIP services?
There are many advantages to using TPG Naked ADSL2+ VoIP services.

20. What are the differences between TPG Naked ADSL2+ and TPG Naked ADSL2+ with VoIP plans?

If you choose the TPG Naked ADSL2+ plan, you will need to make other arrangements for telephony, such as using a mobile phone or another landline number. If you choose the TPG Naked ADSL2+ with VoIP plan, you can make low cost phone calls via the Internet, and also enjoy incoming phone calls through the DID number which is assigned to you.

21. Instead of being assigned a new DID number, can I choose to bring my old number across?
Unfortunately, at this stage you cannot bring your old number across. TPG will assign you a new phone number after registration.

22. Can I choose my new phone number?
Unfortunately, at this stage customers are unable to choose their own numbers. TPG will randomly assign a DID number to you upon registration.

23. When will I be able to start using the VoIP service and my new DID number?
Once payment has been received for your plan, you will be assigned your new DID number. Once your Naked ADSL 2+ service is active, you will need to verify that your router is configured correctly for both Internet and VoIP usage. Once you have done so, you will be able to use your new VoIP service.

24. Will Internet throttling affect VoIP call quality?
Internet speed throttling should not normally affect VoIP call quality. However, if the connection is under heavy usage, you may experience some drops in call quality.

25. How does the call quality compare with that of a traditional landline phone?
Under ordinary conditions, the quality of the call is comparable with that of traditional PSTN or landline phone services. Naked DSL VoIP call quality may be affected under certain circumstances dependant on the quality and speed of the customer’s ADSL connection. Disturbances to the customer’s ADSL service can affect the quality of VoIP phone calls. If the customer is simultaneously running several programmes which require high bandwidth usage, the call quality may be compromised.

26. Is the TPG network based locally or overseas, and how does the location affect customers?
The TPG network is based locally – this allows for great voice quality on Naked DSL VoIP services.

29. Will making VoIP calls affect my broadband usage limits?
When you use VoIP to make phone calls using your broadband connection, the VoIP router sends packets of data over the Internet in order to transfer your voice. TPG will count this usage towards your monthly broadband usage quota. As a rough rule of thumb, 10 minutes of conversation over your VoIP line will consume 0.6 Megabytes of data. An average household makes about 1000 to 2000 minutes of phone calls per month, so this equates to roughly 60 to 120 Megabytes of usage.
