Review Westnet’s ADSL Option 6 Bundled Broadband Plan Compare Broadband

Posted February 16th, 2012

Westnet is now one of the top ten internet service providers (ISPs) in Australia. It was not always like this however, as when it was founded in the remote West Australian town of Geraldton, by Chris Thomas in 1994, it was confined to a spare bedroom of his house. Since that humble beginning, it has gone on to win industry awards and offer a second to none range of low priced ADSL and ADSL2+ internet broadband plans. As well as concentrating much of its energy into providing high speed broadband it also provides satellite, mobile broadband, telephony services, domain hosting and domain registration. One of its stand out points is its low minimum contract terms of just six months. Although this might have the effect of pushing up the initial monthly costs in the short term, it makes it quite worthwhile once the contract is finished. All its products are available Australia wide. One of its prized broadband products is the Westnet’s ADSL Option 6 Bundled Broadband Plan.

Features of the Westnet ADSL Option 6 Broadband Bundled Plan

This ADSL internet broadband plan comes bundled with your home telephone. You can also include VoIP for cheap voice communication purposes if you choose to do so. Other features include the following:

  1. A data download allowance of 100GB. This is quite a substantial data allowance and it is split into 50GB during peak periods and 50GB during off peak.
  2. Speed of 8Mbps which is quite fast for an ADSL connection. One of the factors determining the speed you are likely to obtain will be the distance you are located from the exchange and the capability of the phone line carrying the signal. More outlying areas some distance from the exchange using the old Telstra copper wire network could experience slower speeds than those living in an urban area where the network has been recently upgraded.
  3. Fees and charges. There is a set up fee of $79.95 but once this is paid the only other cost you will ever have to face will be the minimum monthly cost of $129.90. This is in repayment of the contract price of $859.35 over a six month term.

This is a simple straight forward broadband plan that you will find adequate in data allowance to successfully download your online games and YouTube videos. If you are in business it will handle most of your large files. Because it is not the top of the line ADSL2+ broadband it will be best suited to those living in areas more distant from the major city CBD’s’

The Growth of Westnet

Westnet was purchased from its founder Chris Thomas by another Geraldton telecommunication company, Mitchell and Brown Communications in 1996. Three years later, in 1999, the business was relocated to the City of Perth. Business continued to grow for the next nine years and this was noticed by another fast growing West Australian ISP, iiNet, who brought it out for the princely sum of $81 million. iiNet decided to continue operating Westnet as a separate company to itself and this has continued to this day.

Westnet is an Award Winning Internet Service Provider

Westnet is no stranger to winning industry awards. One such competition for the ‘Best ISP in Australia and New Zealand,’ held by ‘PC  Authority’ magazine, attracted 20,000 participants. The people voting were asked to choose on the basis of service and reliability. This competition, that first took place in 2009, was the largest such survey ever undertaken in Australia and New Zealand and was regarded as being an independent evaluation of which ISP at that time was offering the best telecommunication and technical products to the Australian and New Zealand markets. Westnet received the six star perfect score. As if to prove it wasn’t mistaken the first time around it did it again the following year taking the same award two years in a row.

This wasn’t the first time Westnet had taken out an award. Back in 2004 it had been rated Australia’s top dial-up and broadband ISP by the 16th A.C.Nielson ‘Consult Australia’ online survey. This survey had a total of 18,580 people contacted. It showed 97 percent of Westnet customers were satisfied with the service they were receiving at the time and that 76 percent were extremely satisfied. In the dial-up category 94 percent of users said they were satisfied and 47 percent extremely satisfied.

Westnet is one of Australia’s ISP success stories. It has grown from humble beginnings in an outback West Australian town to become one of Australia’s top ten providers. It has got there by giving the consumer what it wants most, which is fast a broadband connection as is humanly possible, with the shortest contract time. As it is now owned by another West Australian success story, iiNet, consumers can expect a lot of focus being placed on improving broadband services in the more outlying areas of Australia.
